SCENT PREFERRED TO A POUND NOTE.
(Special to the “ Star.'') LONDON, November 1
Mr Ramsay MacDonald made two confessions when he addressed the Southampton Rotary after lunch yesterday. He said that sitting cross-legged in an Eastern bazaar, spending the day haggling over the price of a carpet, with good cigarettes, a delightful cup of coffee and a genial Oriental companion, was to him far better than days spent in another place when the eleven o’clock rule was not suspended.
“ I am one of those who detest utilitarianism,” he further declared. “ I would much rather have a beautiful scent than a pound note—very much against my Scotch nature.” - Mr MacDonald added that a man might know all that was to be known and in the end be a consummate fool. “For Gods sake, believe in something—even if it is only in the existence of the devil,” was his final advice.
