REST-ROOM AT CHESTER STREET SITE URGED BY BURGESSES.

The Council of the United Burgesses’ Association last evening decided to ask the City Council to promote a Bill to make the Chester Street fire station available as a site for women’s conveniences. It was also decided to ask the Health Department to promote legislation to compel picture-houses to provide conveniences for patrons. The report of the committee set up to seek possible sites stated that the old fire station was the most suitable for the Plunket Society’s and women’s rest room. Other sites considered were those opposite the Y.M.C.A. on the river bank, the plot in Cashel Street in front of Hallenstein's, and that portion of Victoria Street now occupied by the cab stand. The Chester Street site, it was stated, was set aside a a fire reserve, and it would be necessary for special legislation to be passed before it could be used for other purposes. The different women’s organisations in the City were in favour of this site. It became more necessary to have one there now it had been decided to erect a band rotunda on the site. The committee was of opinion that conveniences already closed in the city should be reopened, under proper supervision.
