LAND AGENT CONVERTS MONEY TO OWN USE.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. December 5. Nine charges of having fraudulently converted to his own use money received as deposits on a house property were preferred to-day against J. D. M. M’ln tyre, a land agent, aged fortysix. The amount involved was £364. A. J. Petherick, public accountant, in evidence said that the usual books of account had not been kept and accused admitted that he had not kept a cash book. The trust account in the Bank had ceased. The credit balance in it was 9s 3d. So far as witness could tell the total shortage was £364. The police gave evidence that accused had made a statement that business in the land agency was not bright and, to keep afloat, was compelled to use the deposits to pay expenses. He had no intention to defraud anyone, but kept hoping for better times. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.
