PREPARING FOR THE NEW REGENT PICTURE THEATRE.
CATHEDRAL SQUARE TO HAVE COUNTRY’S MOST PALATIAL FILM HOUSE.
Consequent on the sale to Mr J. Willis, head of the firm of Messrs M’Kenzie and Willis, auctioneers, of the Queen’s Theatre, it is probable that a start will be made early next year with the alterations necessary to convert the Royal Exchange Building into the Regent Theatre. Extensive alterations are to be made to the Queen’s Theatre building to fit it for the purposes of Messrs M’Kenzie and Willis’s business. The theatre will end its career as a picture house in January next, and a start will at once be made with the alterations. Messrs M’Kenzie and Willis will enter their new premises as soon as these alterations are completed. Immediately thereafter, a start will be made with the extensive alterations necessary to convert the Royal Exchange Buildings into the most luxurious and up-to-date picture house in Australia or New Zealand. Preparations for the undertaking of this work are already in hand. With a view to ascertaining the latest developments in theatre construction, the architect will visit Australia and America. The best developments in these countries will be embodied in the design of the new Regent Theatre.
