MINISTERIAL. The lion. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Finance, came to Christchurch on the southern express last evening. He left at 6 p.m. to take the ferry steamer to Wellington. The Hon F. J. Rolleston, Minister of Justice and Defence, arrived in Christchurch last evening, and went on to Wellington. The Hon W. Nosworthy left Christchurch for Wellington last evening. After spending yesterday in Christchurch, Sir Joseph Ward left last evening for Wellington. At a well attended meeting of St Andrew’s Church, Dunedin, it was unanimously decided to send a call to the Rev H. J. Ryburn, of Ivaikohe, North Auckland. Mr S. J. Wearn, late of Whitcombe and Tombs advertising department, and previously associated with Messrs Jewell, Skinner Ltd., of this city, has accepted a position on the staff of the Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd., at their head office, Wellington. The Rev Clyde Carr, M.P., has returned to Christchurch from Timaru. He will be present at Monday night’s meeting of the City Council. Mr J. E. Purchase, principal of the Canterbury Training College, left for Wellington by the ferry steamer Maori last night. Mr S. R. Watson, of Canterbury College, will leave next week en route for Sweden, where he will take up a position with a Swedish firm of electrical, engineers. Recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel include Messrs lan MacEwen (Wellington), S. J. Robinson (Auckland), and C. E. Hope (Cheshire, England). The election of Mr S. G. Smith, M.P., as a member of the Victoria University College Council for Taranaki, in place of Mr P. J. H. White (resigned), was announced at the meeting of the council on Thursday. Mr Justice Frazer, Judge of the Arbitration Court, was sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by his Honor Mr Justice Reed yesterday. Mr Justice Frazer left Wellington to-day for Auckland to take up Supreme Court work there. The Management Committee of the Wellington Cricket Association, at its meeting this week, placed on record its great regret and sorrow at the sudden -death of Mr J. F. Peake, secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, whose services to the game over a long period of years have been a large factor in the advancement of cricket in New Zealand. A message expressing the sympathy of the cricketers of Wellington is being forwarded to Mrs Peake.

1 Mr A. R. Cooper (Wellington) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. The Rev E. W. Batts, who recently graduated at the Baptist College, Auckland, has accepted a call to the Baptist Church, Resolution Street, Lyall Bay, and will commence his twelve months’ ministry on December 9. Mr Batts, who is a New Zealander, had a brilliant college career. Major-General W. Lassiter, of the United States Army, on transfer from the Philippine Islands to another command in the United States, is visiting New Zealarfd on the way. He expects to leave the Dominion early in December. The resignation by Professor J. M. E. Garrow of his position as Professor of New Zealand Law was received with regret by the Victoria University College at its meeting on Thursday night. Oil the motion of Mr H. H. Parkinson, seconded by Mr Fair, a resolution expressing high appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the college by Professor Garrow was carried unanimously. Archdeacon and Mrs Kempthorne celebrated their golden wedding at Nelson last week. They were married by the late Bishop Suter on November 7, 1878, in the Bishopdale Chapel, the first marriage which took place there. The occasion was celebrated in the chapel by Holy Communion. The celebrant was the Bishop of Nelson, assisted by Canon Kimberley, son-in-law of Archdeacon and Mrs Kempthorne. The bishop referred to the fact that two of the archdeacon’s sons were serving as clergymen in important positions in the North Island, and another was the bishop in Polynesia. Mr F. F. Shalders, who has been connected with wool selling in Wellington through the Neyp Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, since 1901, was the recipient yesterday of a cheque for a substantial amount from woolbuyers. The presentation was made by Mr H. T. Milne, president of the Buyers’ Association, before the sale began. Mr Milne referred in a brief and felicitous speech to the high appreciation in which Mr Shalders was held by the wool buyers. His consistent urbanity and long experience of the trade had commanded the respect of all who had been associated with him in the business. Mr Shalders, in thanking Mr Milne and the Buyers’ Association, referred to the growth of the New Zealand sales from very small beginnings to their present dimensions. He had always received the kindness and co-operation of buyers in conducting the sales and regretted the severance of his active connectiin with the sales. His interest, however, would be as keen as ever in everything connected with the disposal of wool in New Zealand. He greatly appreciated the remarks of the president of the Buyers’ Association and the kindly expression of the appreciation of its members.
