HEATHCOTE COUNCIL REFUSES TO SUPPORT REDUCTION IN FEES.

A meeting of the Heathcote County Council was held last night, when there were present—Messrs C. Flavell (chairman), H. Moore, W. Kerr, J. F. Scott, J. L. Danks, W. Scarff and B. Riley. A letter from the Local Bodies’ Loans Board granted authority to take a poll on the proposal to raise £2200 for the extension of waterworks at Mount Pleasant. The date of the poll was fixed for December 19. The District Highways Council stated hy letter that it expected to be in a oosition to call tenders for the laying down of Page's Road about Christmas time. The Public Works Department solicited information as to the amount received in heavy traffic fees, and whether heavy motor vehicles did more damage to the road than ordinary motor-cars Members were of the opinion that heavy vehicles did much more damage to the road than ordinary cars, and were opposed to any reduction in heavy traffic fees. The Opawa Swimming Club asked for the council’s support in obtaining the sheds and other buildings at present situated on the. land adjoining the baths, and asked the council to approach the Education Board. It was resolved to confer with the board. The Mount Pleasant Burgesses’ Association was given permission to erect dressing sheds at the end of Mount Pleasant jetty, provided the plans were first approved. The council granted £5 5s to the Canterbury Surf and Life-saving Association towards the cost of controlling the beaches at Brighton and Sumner. The application from Huntsbury residents for a sanitation service was granted, subject to the residents signing up. The ranger reported that fourteen cows and two horses had been impounded during the month.
