j HISTORY OF WASHINGTON LODGE CONTINUED, i Owing to his departure for England, I Dr Patrick was granted leave of abj sence and Dr Mickle was elected to the ! vacancy. At a meeting on August 4, 1884, it was decided to purchase a section and erect a lodge room thereon, and at a later meeting Brother Faville reported having secured an option and paid £5 deposit on the section at the corner of Selwyn and Disraeli Streets. It was agreed, on the motion of Brother A. Schwartz, seconded by Brother Clements, that the section be purchased for £7o s and the transfer was completed on May 11. 1885. At the close of 1884 the membership stood at forty-five and the half-yearly receipts were £6O 8s 7d. The 1885 Grand Lodge sessions were held in Invercargill, Brother E. Taylor representing the district. On his' return he resigned as secretary of the lodge. The vacancy was filled by his son, Brother T. E. Taylor, with Brother Faville as treasurer. During the year a Past Grand regalia was presented to Brother A. H. Townsend for his able conduct as Noble Grand. Since 1883 the question of changing the name of the lodge had not been furthered, but on December 7, 1885, it is recorded that the Registrar of Friendly Societies having approved, the lodge took the name of Washington Lodge No. 45, 1.0.0. F. The 1886 installation was carried out bv the D.D.G.M., Brother the Rev A. C. Wright, of the Prebbleton Lodge Brother Faville, who had in hand the purchase of a lodge room site, presented the deeds of the section to the lodge on June 7, 1886. CITY COUNCIL ACTIVITIES. It is very gratifying to the residents of Central and West Spreydon to notice the amount of work being done on the streets leading to their district, especially Bletsoe Avenue and Milton Street, and they hope that it will not be long before these streets will be tarsealed. Meanwhile a coat of fine screenings along the centre of Milton Street would be a great improvement. The filling in of Smart’s Pond is steadily progressing and shortly this menace will only be a memory. JOTTINGS. The users of Barrington Park are much disappointed at the action of the City Council in holding up the erection of the proposed conveniences. Tenders closed on October 12, but as yet there is no sign of a commencement of the work, which is very urgent. UNION CHURCH TENNIS CLUB. The A grade team played Redcliffs at Wilding Park last Saturday, but owing to rain the match was not completed, the remaining singles being played on Tuesday last. The match resulted in a win for Union by 90 games to 75, after forfeiting nine games owing to the absence’of a player. Results : —Singles—J. L. Squire won 9-4, S. M Bell 9-6, D. M. Hay 9-2, Miss H. P. Hay 6-3, Miss I. F. Hay 6-3. Men’s doubles—Squire and Hay won 9-2, Squire and Bell 9-7. Ladies’ doubles— Misses D. Lockwood and I. Hay won 6-3. Combined doubles—S. M. Bell and Miss R. Bryden won 6-4, D. Hay and Miss D. Lockwood 6-2 The club’s C team to the Addington Catholic Club's courts, but owing to the absence of some members of the Catholic team the match was not played. The weekly handicap competition volley board, for the Liversedge Buttons, was won by Miss M. Lockwood 19, plus handicap 6, total 25, and A. S. Bell 40, handicap plus 4, total 44. The competitions for men’s and women’s junior championship singles are now in full swing, and the draw for open men’s and open women’s doubles is out.

ADDINGTON LEAGUE SOCIAL CLUB. There was a large attendance at the weekly dance held in the Selwyn Street Hall by the Addington League Social Club last Tuesday. A Monte Carla fox-trot and other novelty dances were held, the winners being as follows: Monte Carlo, Miss Newton and Mr Leatham; lucky spot, one-step, Miss Hill and Mr Cole; lucky spot fox-trot. Miss Morrissey and Mr Rundle. Particulars of next week’s dance are advertised in this issue. BARRINGTON LAWN TENNIS CLUB. During the last fortnight the follow-

The first competition game of the club was played on Tuesdav, when a. rink consisting of Jones, Ryan, Robinson, Hope (s.) beat Grey. Free, Spiller, Cooke (s.) for the M’Gimpsey Buttons. The club has entered four rinks in the pennants, the first game of which was played last Saturday, when Barrington lost the four games. 'I here are two rinks in the mid-weex games. * Games have been played against Papanui, resulting in a win ?nd a loss, and against Cashmere, resulting in two losses. SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee was held on November 5, Mr J. Mackenzie presiding. Correspondence was received from the Open Air League asking for a report on the open-air type of school. The chairman reported having forwarded a statement to the effect that the schools had given every satisfaction. The secretary of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association wrote asking for suggestions with respect to changing teachers in mid terms. After discussion the matter was left in the hands of the delegates to the association. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to Mr and Mrs Winson, who judged the fancy dresses at the recent social, also to the head master and the teaching staff for their valuable services. The head master’s report showed an attendance of 212 out of 228; the City Council Reserves Committee had notified that it could not reduce the rent of the hall; several of the scholars had received dental treatment at the hospital ; Miss Phyllis Limbrick was successful in obtaining her teachers’ D certificate at the examinations held during the second term holidays; Miss Green way and Miss Limbrick (probationers) and Mr Henderson (substitute assistant) would be severing their connection with the school next month on the completion of their year’s engagements; the date of closing the public schools for the summer vacation had been fixed by the Department for Wednesday, December 19. It was resolved to hold the school picnic at Sumner on December 16, the charge to be Is for adults, children free. Application was received from the Spreydon Swimming Club for the use of the bath on the usual terms. This was granted, and three representatives were appointed—Messrs Wills, Hall and Bell. The resignation of Mr Voss, the head master, who is retiring on superannuation, was received. It was resolved that a letter of appreciation for his services be forwarded, and a presentation be made later on.
