RYE PRESENTS TRAGIC SCENE; VILLAGE IS DENUDED OF MEN.
DISTRACTED WOMEN HARDLY REALISE FULL FORCE OF CATASTROPHE
(United Press Assn. —By Electrlo Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received November 17, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, November IG. Rye presents a most tragic scene. The village is denuded of menfolk and the distracted women hardly realise the force of the catastrophe. One young wife to-day wandered hatless on the wind and rain-swept beach. She saw a group weeping and asked' what they were crying for. She remarked: “My husband is late home, but I have his dinner in the oven.” Her friends led her gently homeward. Subscriptions are already coming in from all over the country. On Monday the thirteen bodies recovered will be buried in a single grave.—Australian Press Association.
