OBITUARY.
LATE MRS JOHN BURROWS. The death occurred at the end of last month of Mary Ann, wife of Mr John Burrows, a well-known resident of Harewood Road. Mrs Burrows was the eldest daughter of Mr John Stanley, a passenger by the Randolph, which arrived in Lyttelton on December 16, 1850. The Stanleys remained for a time in Lyttelton, where Miss Stanley was born in 1852. They afterwards moved to the scene of their future home, a section in the remote wilderness, some seven miles from Christchurch, about half a mile from the present Harewood Church. Here Mr Stanley planted an extensive orchard and supplied Christchurch with one of the first and most successful examples of apple-growing in the province. In the early sixties there was neither church nor school nearer than Papanui, and the Stanley children had to walk four miles and back every day
to school. Sunday may have been a day of rest, but it was not a day of idleness. Again they walked to Papanui in the morning for service, remaining through the afternoon for Sunday School, and walking home in the evening. \Vhen the Church of St James was built at Harewood, Miss Stanley proved a veritable tower of strength. She conducted a Sundav School, instituted and led a chtirch choir, superintended the lighting and cleaning of the church, duties which she carried on for many years faithfully and ungrudgingly. She died after a long life devoted to duty and the service of her religion. She leaves her husband, Mr J. Burrows, one daughter, Mrs W. Foster, and one son, Mr C. S. Burrows, to mourn their loss. The Rev W. H. Orbell, of Papanui, conducted the burial service. The l>earers were as follow: Messrs J. J. Burrows, J. Stanley, S. Harrington, H. Harrington, S. Hockey and V.
