Miss Carpinter is visiting friends in the North Island. Mr and Mrs Bonythan. of London, are the guests of Mrs Rutherford, Mendip Hills. Mr and Mrs 11. E. Watson, of London, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at the United Service Hotel.
Miss A. 11. Cookson, who for eight years has been matron of the Whangarel Hospital, has been appointed matron of Wellington Hospital. _Mi«s Betty White and Miss Molly Sidey (Hawarden), and Miss W. Judd (Darfield) are guests at Warner’s Hotel.
Mr and Mrs H. Abbett (Oamaru), Dr and Mrs Gibbs, Mrs Jamieson (Nelson) and Mrs P. Jenkins (Blenheim) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Miss Lucy Cowan, whose dramatic pupils’ recent honours were chronicled in these columns, has probably attained the highest number of wins in the Dominion for the year. The patrons of the carnival fair held each night at Smith and Smith’s, Tuam Street, have been well supplied with fun and all manner of amusement. The fair will be continued this evening and again to-morrow night. The engagement is announced of Irene Annie, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Watts, “ Eversleigh,” Graham’s Road, Tinwald, to Richard William, son of the late Mr and Mrs John Wright, of Rangitata Island.
Mrs Washer, Miss G. Bennett, and Mrs Frank Dyer (Wellington), Mr and Mrs 11. B. Newman (Sydney), Mr and Mrs Vivian S. Jacobs, Mrs M’Queen and Miss M'Queen (Dunedin) are staying at the United Service Hotel.
The Marist Brothers football team entertained the Christian Brothers at a dance in the hall, Barbadoes Street, on Saturday. The hall was gay with streamers, and the beautiful cup, won that day, was exhibited. Mrs Dalton’s Personality Trio provided excellent Recent arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: Mr E. W. Bierre (Wellington), Mr J. R. Bruce, Mrs and Miss Seay (Timaru). Mr James Macallister (Invercargill), Mrs N. Grant (Timaru), Mr L. Milliken (Springfield), Mr M. Pratt, Dr J. M’Brearty (Greymouth), and Mrs W. Algie (Eketahuna), Mrs Silsby, Misses Silsby (Wellington).
Mrs S. Perkins was hostess at a very enjoyable evening held at her residence in Fitzgerald Avenue on Wednesday to celebrate the ninth birthday of her son Sidney. The birthday cake was decorated 'with nine kewpies. The diningroom was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers and lights. The evening was spent in musical items, songs, games and dancing, musical items being rendered by Miss Maisie Johnstone, Mr B. Powell and Mrs Sharpe. The accompanist’s duties were carried out by Miss Pat Francis. Among those present were:—Mrs S. Perkins, Mrs Sharpe, Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Hobbs, Mrs Foster, Miss Maisie Johnstone, Miss Pat Francis, Ruby Atkins, Dorothy Souter, Masters Desmond West, Sidney Perkins, Peter Bamford. Mr B. Powell, Mr S. Perkins, Mr W. Thoin and several others.
A successful surprise party organised bv Miss E. Platt visited the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Unwin, Torrens Road, Hillmorton, recently, to celebrate the birthday of their daughter Alice. Games, competitions and musical items passed the evening pleasantly. Comet solos given by Mr W. Unwin, jun., were very much appreciated. Mr E. Drapper carried out the duties of M.C., assisted by Mr F. Platt. The competitions were won by Mrs F. Buchanan and Mr F. Platt. The singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ” brought a delightfull evening to a close. Those present were:— Mr and Mrs W. Unwin, Mr and Mrs F. Platt. Mr and Mrs *F. Buchanan, Mr and Mrs W. Randle, Mr and Mrs S.
