WORK TO BE FOUND FOR HUNDRED MEN.
MINISTER WILL HELP LOCAL UNEMPLOYED. (Special to the “Star. s ’) WELLINGTON, September 25. Unemployment in Christchurch is as acute as at the commencement of the winter, stated Mr Sullivan (Avon) in the course of an urgent question on the subject in the House to-day'.. According to the Labour Department, nearly 500 men were on its books, and he wished the Minister of Public Works to take steps to provide additional work to cope with what he regarded as a very distressing position. The Hon K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, replied that he had not had sufficient time to make inquiries, but information he was able to secure showed that employment could be found for a hundred men in the near future. He undertook to make further investigations. The Auckland unemployment situation was mentioned by Mr Savage, who said 840 men were registered as unemployed, of whom 70S could do heavy work. The Prime Minister suggested. in reply, that the cessation of forestry operations by the Government and private companies was responsible for the Auckland difficulty, but already a number of men had been transferred to certain work.
