A cable from Sydney announces the death of Mr B. B- Allen, prominent woolbroker, of Sydney, aged sixty-one. Mr D. J. Evans, clerk to the Westland County Council, left Hokitika today to attend a conference in Wellington on Wednesday to form a County Clerks’ Association.
Mr W. J. Wilson, of the Comptroller of Stores Office, Railways, Wellington, leaves by the Marama on Friday for .Sydney. Sir Harry Lauder, the well-known Scottish comedian, will pay a visit to New Zealand shortly. He expects to lea Y-e London in the middle of November, arriving in Wellington just. before. Christmas, and will spend Christmas at Edendale, Otago, as the guest of Mr Donald M’Donald. Messrs H. 11. Le Pine, G. Kerrinson, C. S. Grear, R. G. Rose, A. M. Holmes, 11. A. Beauchamp, W. R. Smith, G. Gore (Wellington), C. Marks (Melbourne) and L. Burmester (Auckland) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Messrs C. Munt (Wellington), J. 11. Meek (Dunedin) and A, F. Fleming (Gore) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Mr P. C. M’Nabb, postmaster at Ross, has been transferred to the Telegraph Office at Wellington.
At St John’s Church, Westport, on Sunday morning, Bishop Sadlie.r, of Nelson, inducted the Rev J. W. Bloyce into the charge of the parish. A motion of sympathy with Mr P. R. Climie in the loss recently of his father was passed last evening by the Sumner Borough Council, on the motion of the Mayor (Mr W. 11. Nicholson). A \'Ote of sympathy with Mr J. H. Wood in the death of his daughter, was passed at last night’s meeting of the newly-formed Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association.
Mr R. Lightbody has been elected chairman of the New Brighton Public Library. The position was rendered vacant through the death of Mr J. Gamble. Mr W. F. Whyte is expected to take up the duties of Indoor Assistant ‘Traffic Manager of Railways at Christchurch on October 15. He is at present on leave in Australia. Mr James Deans, chairman of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Forestry League, will leave shortly to attend the forestry conference in Australia. Mr E. R. Bonnington, teller in the Westport branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been transferred to Blenheim. Mr D. Herbert, of Wellington, will succeed Mr Bonnington at Westport. Mr C. G. Ogilvie, manager of Death and Co., Christchurch, has been visiting Sydney with a view to getting ideas for the rebuilding of his firm’s premises, and he returned to the Dominion by the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland yesterday. Mr J. 11. Parker, a life member of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was elected president of the society at the annual meeting last night. Mr Parker had been a subscriber to the society for the past thirty years. The death of Mr J. C. Lord, who was an active member of the committee of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was referred to in the report of the committee presented at the annual meeting last night. The late Mr Lord was chairman of the committee from 1922 to 1924, and was a keen and enthusiastic member.
