SLAB WILL MARK SPOT WHERE THE FLYERS LANDED.
PERMANENT MEMENTO AT THE AERODROME. The Government has agreed to give effect to the suggestion that a slab should be put down at the Wigram Aerodrome to mark the spot where the Southern Cross landed after its flight across the Tasman. This decision was conveyed in the following telegram received by Mr P. R. Climie to-day from Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.:— “ The Government will agree to a slab being put down at the Wigram Aerodrome to mark the spot where the Southern Cross landed, but Mr Rolleston is not able to say whether the details can be determined in sufficient time to permit of it being ready on Friday. A consultation between the Minister and his officers will take place to-day. In any case, a ceremony could be held by turning the sod on Friday. Mr Rolleston cannot get away from Wellington, but Sir Heaton Rhodes will represent the Government.” It is expected that the ceremony of turning the sod will be performed shortly before the flyers leave on Friday.
