STUDENT ESCAPED VIRGIL QUESTIONS BY STRATAGEM.
(Special to the " Star.") WELLINGTON*. August 25. When Professor Conway, whose lecture at Victoria College was advertised to start at 5.15 last evening, was not visible from the lecture room at that time, some of those present began to wonder whether his absence was due to a well-known characteristic of professors, that of absent-mindedness. This was strengthened when Professor Rankine Brown entered and apologised for the lateness of the lecture:. The local Latin expert also took the opportunity to ask students present to come to the front benches as Professor Conway would need some " patients.” He then left the room and those in front promptly filled the back benches, and only one young lady was left. When Professor Conway came in he asked those at the rear if they would move to the front, and. however reluctant they were, they did so. The next act on the programme was the handing round of a piece of foolscap on which Professor Brown said those present were to write their names. Gne-stu dent, “ who had met this type of gentleman before,” passed the paper by without signing it. His neighbour' asked the reason. “He does not want our autographs," was the very informative reply. Professor Conway proceeded to ask those whose names appeared on the sheet questions on a passage of Virgil. Three or four times he went down the list and each time the student “ not on the roll” congratulated himself when his neighbour was questioned. Then he became anxious lest Professor Conway should say: “Next man.' Ilic fears proved groundless, and there is one student in this city who is congratulating himself upon the success of his stratagem.
