This contest should prove of great interest to thousands of local football patrons. The visitors have completed a very successful tour of Australia, winning two of the three tests played there, and drawing a total attendance at their matches of well over four hundred thousand. They have played three matches In Auckland before a total attendance of over seventy thousand people, who were thrilled with the hard, scientific play of the teams. The essence of success in League Rugby is fitness, possession of the ball, pace, and combination. Once having gained possession of the ball the Englishmen seldom return it by kicking, but begin a series of passing rushes, and relv on their speed, backing up and elusiveness. Only deadly tackling can prevent runaway victories under these circumstances. and by winning the first test the New Zealand team have proved they have the necessary qualifications in this direction. In the first test the New Zealand forwards succeeded in beating the Englishmen for possession of the hall from the scrums, which was a most important factor in the decision of the game, for the obvious fact is that to score a team must have possession of the ball. The Canterbury League hope to provide acooromoda.t.ion at English Park for up to thirteen thousand spectators. Proceedings will begin at approximately 1215 p.m. when an Auckland fourth grade team will play Canterbury. to be followed at 1.30 p.m. by the Otago v. Canterbury third grade representatives, upon the conclusion of which the big game will commence. All League patrons are looking forward to seeing such famous players as A. Ellaby (wing three-quarter), 6ft, and 12st t2lb. with exceptional pace: J. Sullivan.
English champion full back, and holder of the world’s record of points scored; M. Rosser, Welsh Rugby Union International: J. Parkin, half-back and captain of English teams in 1921-24-28; and others almost equally well known. This match will decide the Rugby League championship of the world. To date honours are even with one win each, and with such a big issue at. stake, combined . with the undoubted ability of players in both teams, it should be a day of many thrills.
