“ POMPADOUR ” IS BIG ATTRACTION AT THEATRE ROYAL.
Large attendances are being attracted to the New Theatre Royal, where the J. C. Williamson Royal Comic Opera Company are presenting “ Madame Pompadour.” Dealing as it does with the gay and luxurious period of King Louis XV. of France, the production is one in which there is beauti ful and lavish dressing. The part of Madame Pompadour is a graceful one and Miss de Vries brings to it a hand some stage presence and much skilful acting. Mr Webster is admirably cast as the ardent Rene. His light tenoi voice is sweet and of wide range. Mi Arthur Stigant is Joseph Calicot, ths amusing playwright, to the life. Hit atrocious rhyming in his everlasting impromptu poetry keeps the audience in perpetual merriment. The other artists in the piece carry out their work well, and the choruses and the orchestra are efficient.
