PRESENTATION OF AWARDS TO SUMNER FIRE BRIGADE.
The annual presentation of the awards to the members of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade, took place in the Town Hall, Sumner, on Friday evening. Superintendent J. Carter, referring to the object of the gathering, thanked the residents for their continued interest in the work of the brigade. He had pleasure in inviting ex-Captain Mean, of Addington, to present the awards. Captain Hean congratulated the members upon the services they were rendering to the borough. He reminded the residents that on Labour Day a. big demonstration would take place* in the borough and he urged them to give it all the support they could. He then presented the following awards;—Gold bar, forty-three years’ service, Superintendent J. Carter; gold bar, twenty-seven years’ service, Dep-uty-Superintendent J. Merritt; gold star and gold bar. twenty-five years’ service, Foreman J. Williams; silver bar, seven years’ service. Secretary R. Clark; silver medal, five years’ service. Fireman T. Griffiths; silver medal, five years’ service, Fireman L. Griffiths; certificate three years’ service, Fireman T. Smith; certificate, three years’ service. Fireman J. Merritt, jun. The Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, who arrived later, took an opportunity of offering his congratulations to the members who had won awards. lie made particular reference to the' long service, forty-three years, gi \-e4l by Superintendent J. Carter. He thanked him for the efficiency of his members, and on behalf of the residents of the borough, expressed admiration and appreciation for the volunteer work whenever it was required of the fire brigade.
