Brighton Breezes

RATES. The rate demands for the year 19281929 are now being posted, and a number of ratepayers who have received their demands are protesting at the increased rates. However, in a few cases the new rates are lower than those of last year. BRIGHTON PICTURES. The programmes for next week at the New Brighton Pictures are: Monday, “Over the Hill,” and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mr Farland and Mrs March will give a benefit in aid of the unemployed of New Brighton. The picture for these three nights will be “The Collegians.” The Mayor, Mr A. W. Owles, stated that the money collected from this benefit will be subsidised by the council. BOWLING CLUB DANCE. The annual dance of the New Brighton Bowling Club was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening. The hall, which was tastefully decorated in evergreens and streamers, reflected much credit on the decorator, Mrs H. A. Bishop, and her helpers. Mr R- A. Stokes was M.C. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr R. Woods’s orchestra. FLOWER SHOW. A meeting of parents and residents was held in the school on Thursday evening. The president of the School Committee, Mr F. Muirson, presided. It was decided that a spring flower show be held on September 29. The proceeds of the show are to be used as the committee’s portion towards the installation of a septic tank for the school. Arrangements were made for stallholders. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. At last Tuesday’s practice the second stage of the fourth competition was reached. Mrs Moses gained a point for the senior pendant with 67, 66; Mrs Bishop, 63, 65, and Mrs Ragg. 62, 66, each a point for the junior pendant. Mrs Ragg also won a point for the Tisdall Brooch. Other scores were: Mrs Ball, 68, 63; Miss Park, 66, 64; Mrs M’Clelland, 65, 66; Mrs Buschl, 67, 65; Mrs Stokes, 64, 65; Mrs Ilurcomb, 65, 62. Donations were gratefully received from Vice-presidents Messrs L. W. Hudson, J. W. Campbell and H. M'Clellaud. FIRE BRIGADE.

Captain T. J. Watts (Newmarket), Advisory Superintendent, paid his official visit to the New Brighton Fire Brigade during the week-end. He inspected a full muster of the brigade, and expressed satisfaction at the excellent turnout and the state of tine plant. The football match between Aranui and the Brigade was played in the week in Aranui, and resulted in a draw, 66. W.C.T.U. Mrs 11. Hall presided at the monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. held on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Schoolroom. The forthcoming district convention was discussed, and Mrs Savill was elected to act as delegate. Nominations for the district officers were received. It was decided that a jumble sale be held in October, in aid of the union’s funds. Assistance was asked for from the New’ Brighton Prohibition League for canvassing the borough. This was readily forthcoming. Afternoon tea w r as served, and one new member enrolled. Mrs F. Mitchell presided at the quarterly social of the young people’s branch, when a bright programme of games, competitions, etc., was arranged by the young men. Mr A. Duncan w’as an efficient M.C. UNEMPLOYMENT FUND. On Wednesday evening at the South Hall a most enjoyable social was held for the unemployment fund of New, Brighton. The Mayor, Captain A. W. Owdes, thanked the committee and - residents for their efforts. Dancing and games were indulged in. The music tor the dance was supplied by Miss Grammer (piano), Mr J. Chegwin (cornet), Mr J. Whyte (violin), Mr Brooks (violin), Mr J. Bradshaw (drums). Items were contributed by Mr Pitt and Mr llardwicke. A lucky spot one-step was won by Mr and Mrs A. Hulme, Monte Carlo by Miss P. Hulme and Mr Sutton. Mrs Burt won the bag-burst-ing competition. The choir number caused great fun, and .was won by Miss Crammer's choir. PERSONAL. The friends of Mrs L. Hewett, of Richmond Terrace, will be pleased to hear that she is slowly recovering after her serious operation.

NORTH BEACfI NOTES. The scholars of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth Standards attending the North Brighton School visited the Winter Show and afterwards the Museum on Tuesday. Arrangements were made for the transport of Standards 111. and IV. by the Inter-City Motor Service and through the kindness of Mr W. S. Bussell (a member of the school committee) the. children were taken to the King Edward Barracks and picked up at the Museum. PROGRESS LEAGUE. The monthly meeting of the North Beach and Waimairi Progress League, postponed from August 6, will be held on Monday evening. BAND OF HOPE COMPETITIONS. A squad of clubs, dumb-bells and a folk dance class have been entered for the annual Band of Hope competitions from North Beach, also the following in dividual entries: Violin solo, Ronald Bell; recitation, Margery Brown; pianoforte solo, Francis Burley; mouth-organ solo. Stewart Franklin. W.C.T.U. A “home meeting” In connection with the North Brighton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at the residence of Mrs D. Goldman on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Goring presiding. Miss Shaw gave an interesting and instructive address on health, diet and the harmful effect of alcohol, A duet was sung by Mesdames Goldman and Beaton. Two new members were elected and one addition made to the Cradle Roll. Afternoon tea was supplied by Mesdames Felton and Goldman. Votes of thanks were passed to Miss Shaw for her address and to Mesdames Fetton and Goldman for their hospitality. RECHABITES. The fortnightly meeting of the Sunshine Juvenile Tent, 1.0. R., was held in the Peace Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening. Sister Ivy Brown, Chief Ruler, presided over a large attendance. After the business had been transacted, various games were played, the children thoroughly enjoying themselves. The Star of New Brighton Tent, 1.0. R., met in the Lodge Room.»Bowhill Road, on Tuesday evening, Sister I. Hull. Chief R\iler, presiding. Arrangements were made to visit the Hope of Richmond Tent on Thursday. BOROUGH RATES. Ratepayers received their rate demands this week. The demands are dated August 14. consequently the payment is due on August 30 and the ten per cent, penalty will be added to rates unpaid six months from the last-named date. Many ratepayers got an tinpleasant surprise at the increase in their rates, due to the increased valuation. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. The North Beach School broke up 3*esterday for a fortnight, school reopening on September 3.
