Tank of Phosgene Gas Explodes in German City.
30,000 DRIVEN FROM HOMES IN HAMBURG BY DEATH-DEALING CLOUD. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received May 22, 8.15 a.m.) BERLIN, May 21. A TANK of phosgene gas exploded in a street at Hamburg last night and a great gas cloud settled on the neighbouring streets, which were hurriedly evacuated. Thirty thousand were driven from their homes. It is known that three are dead and 100 are in hospital, all being in danger of death. The Reichswehr were mobilised to assist firemen in attempting to disperse the cloud with ammonia. All available gasmasks were commandeered and further support was sent by a special train from Berlin. —Australian Press Association-United Service.
