MAORI CHIEFTAINESS DIES AT THAMES.
Per Press Association. . ' THAMES, May 19. The death has occurred of Mere Raiha Pereniki, at Puru, Thames. She was once a chieftainess of the Ngatimaru tribe and was very respected by Maori and palceha alike. She was an authority on tribal lore and native women’s customs. She was a' prominent figure in the days of the mining boom, when she wielded a great influence in favour of the diggers, overcoming native objections to prospectors traversing Maori lands. She leaves a son, Hare Pereniki, a prominent Rangitira, .and a daughter, Haora Tarangangui. Deceased was about seventy-two 3-cars of age.
