Captured Guns Not Likely To Be Shifted.

IT is considered unlikely that any further action will he taken by the Reserves Committee of the City Council regarding the question of removing the guns from Victoria Square. When the matter was referred to the committee there was a strong feeling that it would be better to forget the whole business, and it is believed that that is the view taken by the committee. Some of the Labour councillors who voted for the removal of the guns did so with a feeling that a mistake hail been made in raising the issue, and it is understood that there was strong criticism at a meeting of the Labour Caucus concerning the action of Councillor J. W. Roberts iu bringing the matter up. In deciding to refer the matter to the Reserves Committee, it was hoped to find a happy solution of the problem of the disposal of the guns, but although certain negotiations were commenced no action seems to have been decided upon. Several meetings of the council have been held since the matter was referred to the committee, and the committee has not raised the question again. It is understood that one proposal was to offer the guns to the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and another was to offer them to the Museum. As, however, the guns would still be displayed before the public in the event of either of these proposals being adopted, it was felt by some of the Labour councillors that nothing would he gained by shifting the guns from Victoria Square.
