MR COATES EXPLAINS RAILWAY POLICY.

PAYS TRIBUTE TO WORK OF EMPLOYEES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 17. In making a statement at Paparoa concerning railway operations, Mr Coates paid a tribute to the staff. “There may be some criticism of the increase in the deficit,” said the Prime Minister. “The explanation is that we have endeavoured to give service on the railways. 'We have thought that the best course was to take a fairly long shot, to hold and increase our customers, and to give them service. To some extent we may not have been justified in running some of these services, if they are looked on only with regard to the results of the year's working, but we have looked four or five years ahead, and we think the results will show then that our efforts were worth while in the production of a successful balance-sheet.”

Mr Coates paid a. tribute to the enthusiasm and the efficiency of the men on the railways. “There is one thing of which I shall always be proud,” he said, “and that is the loyal co-operation of the men who are doing the job. They are out to give the public all the help they can, and I am certain their efforts will’ meet with the success they deserve.”
