STAKE MONEY FOR CYCLING HELD BACK.
allegations made against riders. (Special to the “ Star.’’) AUCKLAND, May 2. The “ Star's ” Te Aroha correspondent wires:— J A meeting of the executive of the Te Aroha Cycling Club last evening considered a statement made by M. Randrup that certain riders had entered into an agreement in two distance cycling races at the Easter sports whereby scratch men were to pace limit men.
Randrup also made an allegation that two- riders interfered with the middle markers and so prevented their chance of /winning. Randrup’s letter concluded:—- “ What chance have the backmarkers of winning when the limit men are paced by and ?”
Replies were read denying the statement. One rider admitted remarking that “ it ought to be worth something to us for pacing you,” but said that it was more for a joke than anything else. He denied receiving any payment, and asked why the allegations were not made on the day, which would have been more manly.
The executive was of opinion that there was no proof that the rider had accepted payment and agreed to forward the correspondence to the Northern Athletic Union and accept its decision.
In the meantime the executive is withholding the stake money for all cycling events.
