“Stymied” writes:—“The cabled report of the Compston-Hagen match was obviously inaccurate. It would be impossible for Compston, or any other player, to win eighteen holes on end from Hagen, and settle a 36-hole match 18 up and 17 to play. Such a report is ridiculous, as the feat could not be performed by a first-class player e\cn when playing a fourth or fifth-rater. In all probability the match was a twoday one, extending over 72 hues. Compston might win this by IS up and 17 to go. That w’ould mean that in three rounds of 18 holes each he would average a lead of six holes per round, so that, with 54 holes played, he would be ‘dormy’ 18. The match would end at the fifty-fifth hole, which was halved, leaving Compston 18 up and 17 to play. This would be a wonderful performance against a player of Hagen’s calibre, but it is much more credible than the absolutely incredible account that was cabled.” 3 The Wellington Rugby Union has appointed Mr J. N. Millard sole selector for this year's representative teams. « :: Applications by the following for reinstatement have been granted by the New Zealand Rugby Union’s Management Committee: —K. T. Beadle (Otago). :: « “ Jockey ” Breen, who died recently at Wellington, was a prominent Auckland representative football player, one of the finest centre three-quarters seen in this part of the land, and an exponent of “ potting ” goals whose equal is unknown in modern # Rugby. It wai away back in 1890 that Breen, then a member of the North Shore club, found his way into the Auckland representative three-quarter line, but it whs not until 1894 that he again got representative honours, playing that season for Auckland against the great touring side that New South Wales sent across to New Zealand, Wellington. Hawke's Bay and Waikato. lie was the Auckland captain for part of the representative -season. Breen was a contemporary of “Reg” Masefield, one of the best full-backs that Auckjand has had: Fitchett, the student who created a sensation by stepping straight from a Parnell junior team into the Auckland re presentative team; Elliott, Edmonds and Ronayne, the Parnell representative trinity of that period: Braund.
