EGGS AGAIN ADVANCE SHARPLY IN PRICE.

VEGETABLES are STILL PLENTIFUL AND CHEAP. Eggs Again. Eggs took another sharp rise in price last week, the wholesale rates advancing to 2s 9d a dozen for first grade hen eggs and to 2s 6d for second grade. Supplies are now very short, and the cold weather will tend to diminish them still further. It is possible that there will be another increase in the price of eggs this week, and perhaps the 3s mark will be reached. Although eggs are now dear, they are cheaper than they were at this time last year, when first-grade hen eggs made 3s 6d a dozen wholesale at the first sale in May. This was the "peak” price of the year. Vegetables and Fruit. While suppli.es of vegetables are beginning to decrease, most varieties are still plentiful and cheap. Good cabbages can be obtained for 6d each, and smaller ones cost 2d to 4d each. Cauliflowers cost 4d each, lettuces from 2d each, table potatoes 101 b for Is, onions 81b for Is, melons for jam Sib for Is, white turnips, carrots and beetroot 2d a bunch. Apples and pears are plentiful and cheap. Good dessert apples can be obtained for 6d a lb, and dessert pears cost 4d and 6d a lb. Cooking apples cost 4d a lb, oranges 3, 4 and 5 for Is, lemons 5 and 6 for Is, bananas, 8, 10 and 12 for Is. The cold weather has resulted in a considerable reduction in the supply of tomatoes, and prices have a tendency to harden. Fish. Supplies of fresh fish were fairly plentiful to-day. though there was not jo much available as was the case last week. Following are some prices a lb for fresh fish: Groper lOd (in the piece). Is (cutlets), ling 4d, gurnet 6d. moki 9d, soles lOd, flounders Is, tera kihi 7d. Smoked fish and oysters are plentiful and are selling at the usual prices.
