TRAMWAYS SHOW LOSS OF £4903 FOR THE YEAR.

BX G DECREASE IN NUMBER OF PASSENGERS. The chairman of the Tramway Board. Mr J. Wood, has forwarded the fol- - information respecting the work of the tramwavs for the rear closed on March 31, 192S:—

The board has spent £19,982 in ordinary maintenance of tracks, apart from track renewals. Much of this sum is for surface repairs, the effect being that the road local bodies are relieved from maintenance of the tram portion of the road. If the board received credit for this, it would be able to report a surplus rather than a deficiency. The board’s tracks were never in better order, taking the system as a whole, and are so much better than the rest of the roadway that most of the vehicular traffic is concentrated on the tram tracks, thus increasing the board's maintenance expenses.
