N.Z. MAKES RECORD TRADE RECOVERY.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 17. Mr Coates, addressing the annual meeting of the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association, reviewed New Zealand trade statistics. The total British trade during the year showed an increase on the excess of exports from £7,485,117 to £16,899,386. The total foreign trade showed a reduction in the excess of imports from £9,995,449 to £6,356,712. The total New Zealand trade, therefore, showed an improvement’of £13,053,006, which was a record in recovery from the adverse trade balance. The total trade of New Zealand for the years 1927 and 1928, ending March 31 in both cases, was:—Exports £45,682,338 and £54,962,031 respectively; imports £48,192,670 and £44,419,357. The excess of exports in 1928 over those of 1927 was £10,542,674, while the excess of imports in 1927 compared with 1928 was £2,510,332. The Dominion’s total exports to Britain for the year 1926-27 were £40,137,253 and for the year 1927-28 £47,226,578, while those to foreign countries were £5,545,085 and £7,735,453 respectively. Total British imports into New Zealand for the 1926-27 period were £32,652,136 and for the 1927-28 period £30,327,192, while importations from foreign countries were respectively £15,540,534 and £14,092,165. Of exports to foreign countries the United States absorbed in 1926-27 £3,258,594 and in 1927-28 £3,052,710, while the Dominion imports from the United States were:—l926-27 £9,766,910 and 1927-28 £7,993.156.
