“ BOARD PAID 10/FOR THE PROPERTY.”

PRIVATE ROAD CAUSES LIVELY DISCUSSION

Whether the Tramway Board had a good title to Harrison Street, off Flockton Street, St Albans, for use as a parking place for trailers, provided some lively discussion at the meeting of the Drainage Board last night. A statement that the Tramway Board had paid 10s for the property evoked laughter. Mr W. J. Walter, a member of the Tramway Board, stoutly supported that Board’s right to the sole use of the street, over which, be said, only occupiers of sections fronting the street had an easement. Discussion arose through a letter from the City Council inviting the Drainage Board to attend next Tuesday a meeting of owners interested in the formation and dedication of Harrison Street. “ It’s a non-dedicated street, over which we had some trouble with the Tramway Board,” said the secretary. Mr Walter: It’s a private street, and it belongs to the Tramway Board. “You wait your time, Mr Walter,” interjected Mr H. G. Livingstone. Mr J. W. Beanland then rose to his feet. “ This matter came before the City Council,” he said, “ and while the council recognised that the street was private and belonged to the Tramway Board, in that the board used it for trailers, it was felt that there were others interested who would like to express their opinions about the matter.” “TITLE WORTH 10s.” Mr Walter said that owners of land fronting on the street had an easement in coming and going to their properties. If the street were dedicated the trailers would have to be removed. They had stood at the corner of Barbadoes Street, but they were dangerous there. The secretary: Our solicitors say that the Tramway Board has no better title to the street than has the Drainage Board; that the Tramway Board paid 10s for the property (Laughter.); and that was about all the title was worth; and that the Tramway Board paid full value for it. The chairman of the Drainage Board (Mr H. J. Otley) was appointed to represent the board at the conference.
