CANTERBURY JUSTICES’ ASSOCIATION HOLDS COUNCIL MEETING.

A meeting of the council of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association was held last night; present were: Mr A. Williams (president) and Messrs H. Herbert Smith, G. E. Franklin, F. H. Christian, P. R. Climie, J. W. Baty and J. Russell Brunt. Apologies were received from Messrs H. Holland M.P., F. B. Creswell, C. H. Gilby, A. H. Hobbs and H. F. Herbert.

A letter was read from Mr A. Lawrence Gee, Timaru, to the effect that it was his intention very soon to convene a meeting of all the Justices in Timaru with a view of forming a Sotith Canterbury Association and asking if any of the Canterbury Justices could attend to help on the movement. Messrs H. Herbert Smith and 11. Holland, M.P., were appointed to represent the Canterbury Association. Mr J. H. Fray, the publisher of the “Justices’ Journal,” wrote stating that the next issue of the “Journal” would be published on May 1 and asking how many additional copies would be required, as a full report of the late conference would be given. Three hundred copies were ordered. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote in connection with the Anzac Day celebrations, that the united citizens’ memorial service would be held in the King Edward Barracks and asking if the association were forwarding the usual wreath for the occasion. It was decided to forward a wreath as formerly. The following applications to join the association were agreed to:—Messrs James Carson, Scott, Williams, O. Harvey, Hedley, Elworthy, Jarman, H. Y. Widdowson. George Kelly (Ashburton) and John Wood. Mr A. Williams reported on behalf of the conference delegatesi on the work done at the Auckland Conference. Mr J. W. Baty moved and Mr P. R. Climie seconded that the report be approved and that the delegates be thanked.
