WHISKY BOTTLE HAD WRONG LABEL.
LICENSEE OF COUNTRY HOTEL IS FINED £lO. Discussion on the merits of two different brands of whisky took piace in the Magistrate’s Court this morning between Mr K. M. Gresson and Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. The case was one in which Joe M’Grath, licensee of the Masonic Hotel, Southbrook, was charged with selling whisky in a bottle with a false label. Mr Gresson. who appeared for defendant. admitted the charge. Mr Brown, for the prosecution, said that an inspector visited the premises of the Masonic Hotel, Southbrook. and bought a bottle of whisky on which was the label “Dewar's Whisky.” The bottle contained whisky, but not Dewar’s whisky. The whisky was, however, of a high standard. Mr Gresson said that defendant had, unfortunately for himself, poured the remnants of some D.C.L. whisky bottles into a bottle with the label of whisky. Both brands were good whiskies. Mr Lawry: But it was not Dewar's whisky. Counsel: No, but it was a good drink. Many would consider it a better drink than Dewar’s. Certainly a, man who wanted Dewar's only would not have received what he wanted, but he would have obtained a good drink. Mr Gresson contended that there was no suggestion of mixing whiskies of an inferior brand. Defendant had rot poured draught whisky into the Dewar’s bottle for the purpose of making a profit. The Magistrate convicted M'Grath and fined him £lO and costs. This was the same amount, raid Mr Lawry, as that of a fine inflicted three months ago on M'Grath on a charge of mixing rum.
