PILLION RIDING MAY BE OPPOSED.
CYCLISTS ALARMED AT LOCAL BODIES’ ACTION.
Considerable discussion has taken place amongst motor-cyclists at the present time over the report that, though pillion riding may become legal under the new motor regulations, representations are being made by local bodies to have it prohibited. At last night's meeting of the motor section of the Pioneer Spcrts Club the secretarv (Mr C. Leeming) said that he had heard that a conference of local bodies was to be held at Nelson in the near future at which delegates from certain bod?t.s were to make representations to have pillion riding declared illegal. lie hkd circularised motor clubs and others interested to that effect, he said, as a strong protest would have to be made. The matter was discussed at some length and the secretary’s action was approved. The Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) wrote in answer to a letter stating that as the regulations the Government was bringing down under the Motor Vehicles Act would affect the Council's traffic by-laws, it had«been decided to defer the making of a b3 T -law permitting pillion riding until such regulations were issued. The letter was received: Mr L. Ashcroft Edwards (Wellington) wrote stating that under the new motor regulations pillion riding (under certain conditions) was legalised throughout New Zealand. In view of this he did not think that local bodies would have a possible chance of having this repealed. No chances should be taken, however, and all interested should do their utmost to prevent any possibility of the club’s good work being nullified. The letter was received.
