RANGIORA COUNCIL HAS SPECIAL MEETING TO CONSIDER SEWERAGE.

A special meeting of the Rangiofa Borough Council was held last evening, to take the preliminary steps towards submitting to the ratepayers a proposal to raise a loan of £27,000 to instal a sewerage system. There were present—The Mayor (Mr W. A. Rouse), Councillors-C. S. Ayres, R. H. Bailey, J. Catherwood, A. E. Evans, C. I. Jennings, J. J. Matthews, J. F. Sutherland and C. W. Tyler.

The council had been assured by Dr Telford that he would not consent to either high pressure water or sewage being installed separately. A letter; was received from the Hon J. A. Young, Minister of Health, stating that Dr Telford had reported to the Board of Health that, at a meeting held on December 7, the council had decided to take a poll of the ratepayers on a proposal to instal a sewerage system only, over a restricted area, at an estimated cost of £27,000. If this information was correct, the Board of Health was willing that the sitting of the Appeal Board, which it was proposed to set up, pursuant to section 23 of the Health Act, should be postponed. The Minister asked for the confirmation of the council’s intention to take the poll. In , reply to the Minister’s letter, the Town Clerk wrote stating that if it could be correctly interpreted as meaning that the sewerage could be installed without water, the taking of the poll on the proposal to borrow the £27,000 would be proceeded with as quickly as possible.

The Town Clerk reported that no reply had been received to his letter. It was agreed that nothing definite could be done in the direction of obtaining the Local Bodies Loan Board’s approval to the raising of the loan until the Minister’s reply came to hand.

The council devoted some time to determining the boundaries of the restricted area. It was decided to eliminate all the lower part of the. borough south of Brook and John Streets, together with agricultural, lands west of Church Street.

It was resolved to submit the revised plan to Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, of Dunedin, the council’s consulting engineer, for a report with confirmation of the estimates of the cost of reticulating the area agreed upon.
