PROVINCE CELEBRATES ANOTHER BIRTHDAY.

BY SIN BAD. Oh! bring the birthday cake along and let us cut it -with a cheer. Let citizens together throng, our province starts another year. Let pilgrims gather once again for friendly concourse and repast, the Psalmist’s threescore years and ten by many seasons has been passed. But does our province creak with age, decrepit and bereft of tooth? Nay, this our noble heritage still bears the sturdy vim of youth. I wonder what those men would say who first this Canterbury planned, if they could but return to-day and cast an eye upon the land. Where once they rode in bullock drays now speedy, swanky motors race, and lofty buildings that amaze the old sod whares now replace. Across the wide and fertile plain snug farms and homesteads meet the eye, with here and there a speeding train and oft an aeroplane on high. If Godley of our progress hears, I have a notion he will say, “So many changes in these years—what will as many more display?”
