PEOPLE OVERCROWD AUCKLAND TRAMS.

BUT MOTORMEN MUST NOT TALK TO THEM. (Special to the “ Star.” AUCKLAND, December 16. Exception to a notice warning motormen that good conduct holidays may be lost if they converse with passengers is taken by members of the Auckland Tramway Union, and special meetings to discuss the position will be held on Monday morning and evening. It is contended that the present overcrowding, against which the union has protested, makes it inevitable that passengers should congregate on platforms of the oars, and incidentally address a question to motormen. The general matter of overcrowding will be discussed by the union, in addition to the attitude to be adopted to the recent notice. “ We know there is overcrowding, and we want more cars, but ratepayers refused to sanction the mom.y being spent,” said the chairman of the tramways department yesterda}-. Regarding the prohibition of talking, he said that such was a breach of the regulations, and notices to that effect had recently been posted. “We credit tram way men with too much common sense to think that they will take any exception to that,” he added.
