Ernest Smith, pilot, and Emory Bronte, navigator, took off fro-m Oakland in the monoplane “ City of Oakland ” at 10.30 this morning for Honolulu. They intend flying back. The objects of the flight are threefold : (1) To be the first civilians to make a flight to Hawaii. (2) To make the first round-trip flight. (3) To lower the time of 25 houp 49 minutes made by the Army airmen, Lieutenants Maitland and Hegenberger. ! The plane circled over the field after | the take-off and then disappeared esj corted by five other ’planes. The [ City o l Oakland carries homing | pigeons, which will be released at mj tervals of two hundred miles at sea. The ’plane made two attempts before it succeeded in getting away. It halted half-way down the runway at the first effort, having run into a rut, but was quickly towed back undamaged.
