Flying To Honolulu.
TWO CIVILIANS TAKE OFF; WILL ATTEMPT RETURN TRIP TO U.S. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Tulv 15. 9.20 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO. July 14. Ernest Smith, pilot, and Emory Bronte, navigator, took off fro-m Oakland in the monoplane “ City of Oakland ” at 10.30 this morning for Honolulu. They intend flying back. The objects of the flight are threefold : (1) To be the first civilians to make a flight to Hawaii. (2) To make the first round-trip flight. (3) To lower the time of 25 houp 49 minutes made by the Army airmen, Lieutenants Maitland and Hegenberger. ! The plane circled over the field after | the take-off and then disappeared esj corted by five other ’planes. The [ City o l Oakland carries homing | pigeons, which will be released at mj tervals of two hundred miles at sea. The ’plane made two attempts before it succeeded in getting away. It halted half-way down the runway at the first effort, having run into a rut, but was quickly towed back undamaged.
