APPEALS HEARD IN MEMSAHIB CASE.

DECISIONS WILL REMAIN UNALTERED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 15. In the appeal to the Racing Conference by J. M’Mahon, chief stipendiary steward, against the decision of the Auckland District Committee in upholding the appeal lodged by M. Wells, owner of Memsahib, against the decision of the Judicial Committee of the Auckland Racing Club in disqualifying Wells for twelve months from June 4, 1927, under part XXXII., rule 1, of the Rules of Racing (the Judical Committee being of opinion that the horse Memsahib was not run to win the Hunt Club Cup), the judgment is as follows:—.

“ After having carefully read the evidence and having heard the parties concerned in the case in the entire absence of any definite evidence of fraudulent intent on the part of Wells in connection with the running of his horse Memsahib in the Hunt Club Cup on June 4, 1927, we decide that the appeal be dismissed, and the decision of the Auckland District Committee be confirmed. “ Harold A. Russell, O. S. Watkins, J. R. L. Stanford, judges.” In the appeal of W. H. Reid, rider of Memsahib in the Hunt Club Cup, the judgment is: “ We have considered Reid’s appeal, but no evidence has been tendered to. us to disturb the findings of the Judicial Committee of the Auckland Racing Club and the Auckland District Committee. We therefore dismiss the appeal.” Reid was previously disqualified for twelve months.

DISPUTE ABOUT LABOUR DAY DATE.

STATEMENT IS MADE BY SIR GEORGE CLIFFORD. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, July 15. Statements which are being made concerning political objection to the action of the New Zealand Racing Conference with regard to the Waikato Hunt Club and the Labour Day date and a possible conflict between the Conference. and Parliament were brought before the notice of * Sir George Clifford this morning. In explanation of the action of the racing authorities, Sir George said that it had been decided for the general good of the turf that the Waikato Racing Club should race on Labour Da> r . First of all it was approved by the Auckland Country Racing Clubs’ Association, then by the Auckland District Committee, then by the Dates Committee of the Conference, and finally it was approved again by the full Conference. “ I have been credibly informed,” said Sir George. “ that if a plebiscite in the district were held among all the racing people concerned it would go in favour of the Labour Day date go ing to the Racing Club and not to the Hunt Club, which is a wealthy body. I must deprecate personal influence being brought to bear in regard to a decision of this matter. I think that political influence should not be allowed in the distribution of racing privileges. “ The sport of racing and all other sports of benefit to the community should be so managed as to be above political or temporary interests.”
