RIVER IMPROVEMENT BEING CONTINUED.

The Canterbury Beautifying Association met yesterday in the Art Gallery, when the Alayor (the Rev J. K. Archer), Dr Chilton, and Alessrs A. D. Dobson, E. If. Andrews, T. D. Bennie, R. B. Owen and G. B. Donaldson (secretary) were present,.. Air Owen reported that a certain amount of work had been done by the memployed on the river bank near Jarlton All!I Road under the River Improvement Fund. An appeal was being launched to raise the sum of £l5O for the purchase of ornamental trees and shrubs and be asked the Beautifying Association to assist in the appeal by givins £25 out of its funds. The work of improving the river banks by the unemployed was being extended beyond the Retreat Road bridge on the Avon and the banks of the ileatlicote were also receiving attention. If the appeal was successful a start could be made with the planting of the railway reserves between Heathcote and Addington. The approach to the city was about as bad as it was possible to be and the planting of ornamental trees and dowering shrubs would do a lot towards improving their reputation as a garden city. The request for £25 was granted. The offer of Messrs T. D. Bennie and Co. of five pounds' worth of shrubs was gratefully accepted. It was decided to realise on the society's securities and bank the proceeds in the P.O. Savings Bank. Several accounts were passed for payment, including one of £53 for the cairn on “ The Bricks site. The thanks of the association were accorded to the District Engineer, Post and Telegraph Department, for removing some of the unsightly telegraph poles that have for so long disfigured the city The secretary was instructed to write to the Town Clerk reminding the City Council that the society’s offer of six ornamental lamps for lighting the riverside was still open. The Alayor agreed that placing electric wires underground was suitable work for unemployed. Air Donaldson intimated that owing to pressure of other business he regretted having to relinquish the duties of secretary. The Alayor moved that the society's appreciation of Mr Donaldson's services be recorded in the minutes. The motion was carried. Messrs Dobson and Andrews were appointed a sub-committee to engage a secretary.
