LEAGUE AND CHARITY.
To the Editor. Sir,—At a meeting of the unemployed committee recently, a member stated he did not know anything about Rugby or League. This statement seems perfectly correct or he would not have made such a fool of his ignorance as he did. If the Northern Union people are so concerned about charity and the unemployed, why don’t they put on a Hornby v. Waimairi game on their own account and devote the proceeds to the unemployed, without trying to “bargt in” on the Rugby Union’s programme It appears to me to be one of the first signs of distress with the League, w’hen they suggest their players should be re-instated to Rugby. To try and make a game half possible is an excuse to sell out, as after the event they would be able to say their players prefer not to be re-instated back to Northern Union. The proposal as it stands at present is impossible, and the League people know it. They were told it last year, told it this year, and no doubt will require to be told again next year. What piffle! I put it to the League that (1) Through financial losses incurred. (2) The failure to sell to the City Council a portion of the land. (3) The loss of their greatest draw cards, Wilson-llall and Mason, the proposal is an excuse to offer to the City Council the full ground of sixty acres and disband. I would ask through you, Sir (with a footnote) what amount of money each year have the Canterbury Rugby Union handed over to charities, and what amount have the Canterbury Rugby League contributed?—l am, etc., RUGBYITE. (The amount contributed by each code is the measure of public support given to the particular game or games given up to charity.—Ed. “Star.”)
