WILL EDUCATION SYSTEM UNDERGO BIG CHANGES?
NEW BILL MAY SEE BOARDS ABOLISHED. Inquiries show that a big change in the administration methods of education in this country *is pending. Nothing definite in the way of a draft of the Bill that will come before Parliament this session has come to hand, but local authorities have heard strong rumours that drastic changes arc to be made, which will perhaps result in the abolition of the system of local Education Boards. It is also suggested that the work of building and furnishing schools may be undertaken by the Public Works Department. It is due to the unsettled state of affairs that the position of Director of Manual Training in Canterbury, held by Mr Grant up till his retirement, is not being filled. No appointment will be made for some months in any case. The authorities fear to appoint a man to such a position while they are uncertain that the appointment will stand after the new Bill has come into force. In the meantime the work is being carried on from the board’s office in Christchurch.
