CAR MAKES PLUNGE OVER STEEP BANK.

CHRISTCHURCH MEN GET SEVERE SHAKING. (Special to the “Star.”) GREYMOUTH, June 23. While an Essex c&r was proceeding along the road between Brunner and Stillwater about 4 p.m. yesterday, it suddenly became unmanageable and dashed oyer the precipitous bank of the Grey- River, falling a considerable distance before it finally settled at the water’s edge. The occupants, Messrs E. Brooks and Rhodes, representatives of A. and T. Burt, of Christchurch, had a miraculous escape from serious injury. As the car fell it rolled over and over, the occupants being thrown out as i't turned for the third time. The bank is very steep at this part of the river and it is remarkable that the impetus the car received did not send it well into the stream.

It is supposed 1 iiat the accident was caused by a defect in the steering gear.

The car had, however, only been used, about five months.

Brooks, who was driving, was badly bruised about the ribs. Rhodes suffered from a cut on liis forehead and was also badly bruised, his clothing being much torn as he was thrown from the car both men suffered considerably from shock. Their injuries were attended to by Dr Violet Rains (Brunner), and later they received treatment at the Grey Hospital. The men had sufficiently recovered last evening to leave the hospital.
