RUGBY-LEAGUE MATCH.

To the Editor. Sir, —Your correspondent, “Rugby,” on the subject of the League’s proposal to play a match with the Union, shows the usual bigotry that one associates with the Rugby Unionists. Because, in other parts, League players are paid for their services, there is no reason whatsoever for stigmatising as professionals the number of fine sports that play under that code in New Zealand. On that argument, all the boxers in New Zealand are professionals, for the reason that there are a number of professionals in other parts of the world, or, what is very much worse to such a high-minded amateur, even in New Zealand itself. Your correspondent should realise that the League offer is only an attempt to co-operate in a most excellent cause, and to show that for such a cause there is nothing but friendly rivalry, with the object of doing the best for those in need. But, as he admits, his opinions are based upon those of “several ill-informed League supporters,” and his “ridiculous and impracticable” opinions arc on a par with his mis-information. 1 am, etc., RUGBY LEAGUE.
