CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE. Frederick Godfrey I fall, aged 28 (Mr Holmes) was charged with that on June 8. with intent to defraud, he obtained from Ronald Alfred Crawford the sum of £4 by means of a false pretence, namely a valueless cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand. Chief Detective Lewis said that further inquiries were to be made and he asked for a remand to June 28. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO, with one surety of £IOO. REMANDED. George Trethewey, aged 30. was charged with having stolen, at Kartigi, on May 17, four tyres, four motor rims, an electric horn, a radiator cap and a fan belt, of a total value of £25, the property of John Gordon and Co. Mr 11 all am, who appeared for accused, asked for a remand to Thursday, and the police offered no objection. Bail was allowed, a condition being that accused must report daily to the police. Nellie M'Quinn (Mr Brown) claimed £37 12s 6d from .1. M. Fraser (Mr Tracy) for damages arising from an accident in which she alleged the defendant was at fault. The Magistrate dismissed the claim. LYTTELTON. (Before Messrs F. E. Sutton and W. T. Lester, J.P.’s.) Sackville Matherson, a seaman, ap peared on a charge of having used obscene language in a railway carriage between Christchurch and Lyttelton. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant M’Gregor stated that the case was a particularly bad one. Accused boarded the 2.45 p.m. train from Christchurch, occupying a second class carriage, and during the trip used the language complained of in front of small children. He repeated the words several times. A fine of £7. in default one month’s imprisonment, was inflicted.
