LIFEBOAT DELAYED, COVER BEING STUCK.

INQUIRY HELD ON DEATH OF MAN LOST OVERBOARD. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 21. Although it is customary to have a body- when holding an inquest, provision is made under the Shipping and Seamen’s Act of 190 S whereby- an inquiry- into the death of a seaman maybe directed by the Minister of Marine after a certain period has elapsed. Such an inquiry was held this morning by the Magistrate. Mr M’Kean, on the death of Sidney- Veale, a fireman, who was lost overboard from the trawler Countess on April 29 near Tiri Tiri Island. The master said that Veale was emptying ashes and was carried over by- the weight of the bag. The man must have been struck by the propellor as he swept past, for he disappeared two minutes after his fall. The crew were immediately called, but a little time yvas lost in launching the lifeboat, as the cover nailed to the top of the boat was stuck owing to the wood being swollen by- water, nevertheless the boat was got over the side in six minutes, but there was no trace of the lost man.

The verdict was that the man fell overboard accidentally while emptying an ash can. Deceased left a widow and three children.
