FOOTBALL NOTES.

SENIOR B. Z .th \T< Conditions were , bad for football on Saturday’, when the ninth round of the so senior B grade was played. The ev grounds were in a bad state, and at Rangiora, where the Old Boys-North ru Canterbury match was played, snow pc fell for a time during the game. * At St: Andrew’s, St. Andrew s and j-j Varsity B had an interesting game, the or latter winning by eight to six. g£ * Old Collegians and West Old Bovs hi also fopght out a close game at Elm- Si wood Park, the former winning by two tl tries to nothing. a ' At the Show Grounds, Christchurch m had little difficulty in beating Syden- w ham by 19 to nil. Technical put up a better perform- J ance than usual and were only beaten ti by Merivale by a margin of seven h< points. At Rangiora, North Canterbury were in good condition against Old Boys, s< and won by ten points to three. f* 1 At Woolston Parle, Linwood went on dthe field four short against Varsity A, « and the game was abandoned at hall- £ time. , , - The following table shows the positions of the teams: — . * a Pts. WEST 1 OLD BOYS (0). At Elmwood Park, after a hard- c fought game, Old Collegians beat West Old Boys by six points to nil. Despite the heavy state of the ground, the game t was fast and interesting throughout. c The first spell was even, both teams £ playing good football, and when halfr , time came there -were no scores. Although Old Collegians had much more t weight in the forwards, the light West ( pack were superior in the loose and j made numerous rushes. The backs 1 were evenly matched, but the handling 1 of Old Collegians was not too sound. . Both teams were sound on defence, iln the second spell West attacked < i early and had Old Collegians on de- , fence for a time. Rundle, the Old Collegians full-back, was *in great form I and stemmed every attack brilliantly. ! Then Old Collegians carried play to I their opponents’ twenty-five. Some of the I West backs were caught out of posiI tion, and Bishop dashed across near the comer. Then a smart piece of work by Rundle resulted in another try for Old Collegians. West made valiant attempts to reduce Old Collegians’ lead, but time was called without any changes to the score. For Old Collegians, Rundle was again outstanding. He played a faultless game. Bishop, on the wing, put in some fine runs, and was the pick of the three-quarters. Earl, at second fiveeighths, was sound, but he did not heein at home with his first five-eighth. Jackman, at half, played well throughout, both on attack and defence. In the forwards, Cottrell played a rattling game and broke away on his own time after time. He was well supported by Maurice and h oung. Roberts, at full-back for est, was again in form and made many good saves. At times, however, he appeared to be a bit slow in taking the ball, sometimes waiting for the bounce. Roberts, wing three-quarter, was good, and, with Chinnery and Biddle, made up a fine trio. Riordan, at half-back, played one of his best games to date. Although he had a heavy set .of forwards, opposing him, he went down to their rushes in great, style. In the forwards, Dawson worked hard all the time. Robb was also good, and put m some good individual play. ST ANDREW’S (8) v. VARSITY B (6). A very even game at St Andrew s saw St Andrew’s Old Boys win from Varsity B by the narrow margin of two I points. St Andrew’s play was rather

ragged at the start and a forward rush , by Varsity let Davis across. Forward play followed, with Varsity predominating, and then an infringement in St Andrew’s twenty-five gained Varsity another three points, Hitchcock taking .the kick. St Andrew’s forwards now , woke up and forcing hard soon had Varsity on defence. Varsity were sound, however, and half-time came with the score unchanged. Play was even for a time. Then a good bit ot work by Blackmore gave him a clear run down the line to score near the posts. St Andrew’s were playing a fine forward game now, and a scrum near the line saw the ball roll over for Davis to force. St Andrew s came on again but Bennet cleared, and the game was transferred to St Andrew s half for a while. Dribbling rushes by St Andrew’s forwards carried play to the Varsity line, and St Andrew s were awarded a free kick, but Leadbetter missed. Play went back to mid-field, where St Andrew’s broke away for Muson to score, and Leadbetter converted. Play was very even for a while and the ball travelled from one end of the field to the other. The game finished without any further score For St Andrew’s, G. Hilson played soundly at full-back in the first half, and in the second took a turn at haltback and put in some good work England at five-eighths played well, but the rest of his backs found him hard to follow. Blackmore, who was rather weak at the beginning of the season, shows improvement with each B ar pe, and on Saturday was noticeable tor his solid work. Cordery went well as wing-forward, while Forsythe, Dowling, and Hilson were about the best of the Pi For Varsity-, Wliaipooti played a safe game at full-back and make few mistakes. The two five-eighths, Blazey and Hawkes, were good, while Bennett at half-back was about the P' ck ° £ back division. In the forwards Brownlee, Eales and Derrick -worked hard. NORTH CANTERBURY (10) V. OLD

A good game -was witnessed at Rangiora when North Canterbury defeated Old Bpys by ten points to three. the teams were very evenly matched and the pace was fast throughout. The country team were the first to attack, and Old Boys had an anxious time for a while. The ground was soon m a bad condition and after about fifteen minutes' play snow began to fall- North Canterbury had the wind m tneir favour and making full use of it scored two converted tries. Old Boys failed to score in the first spell, but put.up a much better display in the . Up and down the play went, with both sides playing in great style. Old Boy s came near scoring on several occasions, but handling was difficult dropped passes lost opportunities,. Then. Tnat put in a great run for Old Boys ana fending off several men, scored in the corner The try was not converted. Old Bovs battled hard to score again, but North Canterbury were too sound and the final whistle came with the score unaltered. . , . _ It would be hard to single out any individual player in the Rangiora team, for they all worked hard and every one justified a place in the team Mehrtens at five-eighths was the pick of the backs and was in every attacking movement. Roberts and L. Hawkins •were also in good form. , For Old Boys, G. Cox at half was the best back on the giround He put in some brilliant work and got the ball away well. Trist on the wmg played a slashing game and his try was £ beauty. In the forwards Jacobs, Forsythe and Sinies were noticeable throughout for their sound play.
