FIRE BOARD HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING.

The Christchurch Fire Board mot last evening. Present: Messrs J. R. Cameron (chairman), E. H. Andrews, K. 9. Robinson. G. D. M’llraitli and H. R. Ilusbridge. The City Council notified that the Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, had been appointed a member of the board, in place of Mr O. W. 13. Anderson. With, reference to a suggestion made by the board to the Canterbury Education Board, that some arrangement should be made with regard to the brigade attending fires at schools outside the fire district, a reply was received stating that the matter had been referred I to the Education Department, Wellington, for consideration. The letter also stated that as the Department would be called upon to meet the expenditure required to replace a school destroyed by fire (inside or outside the fire district) the board considered that the Department should say whether it desired protection or otherwise. The chairman said that on March 15 the board wrote to the Education Board, pointing out that on January 6 the Fire Brigade had turned out to an outbreak of fire at the Spreydon School. That was the second occasion on which the brigade had attended an outbreak of fire in that property, and as the school was outside the fire district, the board wished to know if the Education Board desired to enter into an arrangement to have all schools outside the fire district protected by the brigade. Mr Andrews said that the Education Board was meeting this week and it might have a reply from the Department. The letter was received. The superintendent reported that the total number of calls received during the past month was 34. Of these three were malicious false alarms, nine were chimney fires, six were for hedge, grass and rubbish fires, and sixteen were for actual fires on property In the city. The estimated amount of fire loss was £1503. A lengthy report was submitted by the superintendent regarding the Union Buildings in Cashel Street, which were damaged by fire about six months ago. After discussion the following resolution was carried :—-"Tliat a letter be sent to the City Council pointing out that the city building by-law had not been adhered to, in that the building was enlarged otherwise than by the erection of a second storey over the existing building, in contravention of section 56 (2) of the by-law, in that the yard was built over, and that the board protests against the building being re-instated without the completion of the external walla in brick or other substance as defined in section 64.
