Interesting details respecting the British shipping trade are contained in “Fair Play’s” annual summary just published. Six big groups, comprising the Peninsular and Orient, Royal Mail, Ellerman, Ctmard, Furness-Withy and Holts, own between them 43.7 per cent of the tonnage registered in Britain, and if tankers and small craft under 500 tons gross arc excluded their fleets represent more than half the total tonnage available for overseas trade, being greater than the total fleet of any country in the world, except the United States, and consisting of the finest and most up-to-date vessels navigating tlie seven seas.
