ROBBERY CHARGE MADE AGAINST TWO YOUNG MEN.

BOTH REMANDED, BUT ONLY ONE GIVEN BAIL.

Two young men were charged before Mr H. P. Lawry. S.M., to-day with robbery with violence, but the hearing will not take place until next Tuesday. Only one was granted bail, the other having a record. Richard Carney and Andrew Carney were charged that on February 21 they robbed Stanley Gordon Gow Grant of a diamond ring valued at £2O, and about 5s in money, and at the time of such robbery used personal violence to Grant.

Mr Ha slam appeared for the accused men.

Chief Detective Lewis asked for a remand until Mrch 1, and Mr Haslam asked for bail.

“ What was the nature of the violence?” asked the Magistrate. “ Grant alleges that he was kicked, punched and knocked down,” replied the Chief Detective. “ There was much blood on his clothes.” "Was Grant a mate?” asked the Bench.

“ No. he was a stranger.” replied the Chief Detective. “He picked up with the others and had a few drinks together, and they -were going to some place when the alleged robbery took place.” It was pointed out by the prosecution that, though Andrew Carney had no record, Richard Carney had been convicted before. It w T as not thought that the latter should have bail. A. Carney was allowed bail in the sum of £IOO and two sureties of £SO each, and R. Carney was refused bail.
