BEEKEEPERS CONSIDER ERECTION OF MEMORIAL TO LATE MR SARGEANT.
A meeting of beekeepers was held in the Trades Hall on Saturday evening, Mr T. Best presiding over a large attendance. Mr Best said that the reason for which the meeting was convened was to consider an appropriate memorial to the late Mr G. IT. Sargeant. The late Mr Sargeant. who was one of the best known apiary experts in Canterbury, died recently, and it was now thought appropriate that a memorial be erected. The scheme laid before the meeting was the erection of an apiary to be called “The Sargeant Memorial Apiary.’’ On the establishment of the apiary, Mrs Sargeant would lie asked to work it, and all profits ensuing from its transactions to accrue to her. In the event of Mrs Sargeant leaving the district, the apiary would be left intact in the possession of the Canterbury Branch of the National Beekeepers’ Association. The necessary fund for the erection of the. apiary will be raised by the Canterbury Branch of the associaAftcr some discussion, a committee of five was fdrmed to go into the matter, and to consider means of materialising the project. Discussion arose as to whether beekeepers who were not members of the National Beekeepers’ Association be allowed, to donate to the fund. It was decided that only members of the association would be able to donate to the project, but there was nothing to prevent others from sending donations to Mrs Sargeant herself, to assist her in building an apiary.
