ENGLAND WINS BY 32 POINTS TO 17. LOSS ON TOUR NOW AMOUNTS TO £7OO. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and X.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. January 15. In the League football test, England beat New Zealand by 32 points to 17. The match was played at Headingly. The weather was wet. There were eight thousand spectators. England attacked vigorously from the start, but the New Zealanders countered and rushed down the field, Cole dropping the balk when on the point of scoring. Bacon, with a brilliant sprint, re-established play in the

Blacks’ half, but the visitors carried the ball down the field again. Brown being pulled down a yard from the line. Duftv opened the scoring with a magnificent penalty goal after fifteen minutes’ play. England next pressed hotly, Rees and Carr gaining tries, one of which Sullivan converted. The New Zealand forwards we.re playing well in the loose and were most difficult to check. Kirwan once got brilliantly away but England were fortunate in being able to find touch, after which very keen scrumming took place near the English line. At the end of thirty-five minutes’ play, England relieved the pressure and broke away, Bacon getting a try and Evans another. Sullivan goaled one, and the spell ended: England 16 New Zealand 2 On resuming, England again set up an attack in very strong force. Tries were obtained by Bowman and Bacon, one of which Sullivan goaled. The Blacks rallied brilliantly and put up a remarkable fight. Within ten minutes Delgrosso, Herring and Brown obtained tries, all of which Dufty converted. Delgrosso was then injured and had to be carried off and the Blacks did not recover from the mishap, which enabled England to resume the superiority. Carr scored two tries in the closing stages, one of which was goaled. The final score was— ENGLAND 32 NEW ZEALAND 17 Delgrosso unfortunately injured an ankle when his side was showing a glimpse of real form and temporarily smothering England. For the remainder of the game they were outclassed by the superior speed of the home forwards and the ability of the pack, in which department the visitors are still weak. They obtained the ball only twenty-three times, compared with England’s forty. Dufty, Brown, Sanders and Hall were most prominent. The teams sang “ Auld Lang Syne ” at the conclusion of the match. League players regret that the New Zealanders’ dissensions were so great. At a farewell dinner, held in private, newspapers not being invited, it was pointed out that the New Zealanders were all sportsmen and there was never any ill-feeling during the games. Mr Hair will reply on January 18 to statements made by the malcontents. The receipts at the match were £552. It is understood that the loss on the tour is now £7OO. foTheresuUs of matches played are aa
