MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) > INDECENT EXPOSURE CHARGE. Charles Boyle appeared on remand on a charge of indecent exposure in the Botanic Gardens. Detective-Sergeant J. B. Young' said that the case would have to be referred to the Children’s Court, as ono of the witnesses was a girl of 14. The case was accordingly remanded until Saturday morning. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £SO and one surety of £SO. DENIES THEFT. Daniel M’Arthur was charged that on January 11 he stole a pair of trousers, valued at £2 10s, the property of Frank Hooper. Asked how he would plead, M’Arthur said that he did not remember taking them. lie did not know anything about them. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Young, the case was adjourned till to-morrow, so that evidence can be called. DISTURBED RIVERSIDE ROMANCE. A plea of not guilty to using obscene language in a public place was made by Mary Sheedy. “ I’m not a woman to swear on the street,” she asserted. “ I plead not guiltv to using that language.” “ About 910 p.m. yesterday this woman Was sitting with a man on one of the scats in Oxford Terrace. She was heard using that language by the constable on duty in the street, 1 " said Sub-Inspector Mathew. Constable Thomas Muir gave evidence as to hearing Sheedy using the language. He went and got behind a tree, and heard her use the first phrase appearing on the charge sheet. She appeared to be referring to her companion. Daniel M’Arthur, the man who was with Sheedy, also gave evidence. In convicting the woman. the Magistrate said that he had not got much time for those people who disturbed the peace of the community. He thought she would have to be sent away. Sheedy was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour,
